Learning About Servicing and MOTs

The importance of servicing

Servicing might seem like a lot of money, but the cost is definitely worth it in the long run. No servicing greatly increase the chance of something unexpectedly going wrong, leading to costly repairs. The electrical and mechanical parts will be thoroughly checked, identifying any problems so they can be taken care of effectively.

How often should your car be serviced?

Ideally, you should get your car serviced annually, or by a certain mileage which should be determined by the manufacturer – this is typically around 12,000 miles. Check your cars handbook, as different manufacturers, models, engine sizes and fuel types can have different intervals.

What’s involved in a service?

There are different levels of service, depending on how many your car has had before. If it’s the first service, you’ll typically only need an oil and filter change. For subsequent services, more checks will be carried out, including;

  • Replacing the oil, air and fuel filters
  • Replacing the spark plugs
  • Tuning the engine
  • Checking the brake, clutch, and power steering fluid levels
  • Checking the brake pads and disks
  • Greasing and lubricating components
  • Inspecting the timing belt, tires, lights, and wipers and more.

MOT

The MOT test is a yearly test, required by law, for all cars over three years old. Most of the checks carried out are things also covered in a service, but a the condition of the engine, clutch, and gearbox is not covered. An MOT test will usually take between 45 minutes to an hour, and if your car fails the test, you need to have the problems fixed before you can drive it away. You can’t legally drive a car which doesn’t have a valid MOT certificate, unless it’s being driven to the garage to have the test carried out.
