4 Questions to Ask When Buying a Used Car

f your ride has been looking a little worse for wear recently, it could be time to think about an upgrade. While times are hard for many families right now, there are lots of ways to get your hands on a great car without breaking the bank. With so many used cars for sale in Ipswich, one of the best options is browsing the second-hand market.

Buying a second-hand car is a superb way to save money, because you are truly paying for the vehicle and what it provides, rather than fad features and that ‘new car vibe.’ It is widely known that brand new products lose value as soon as they leave the dealership, so it just isn’t an economical option if you are trying to purchase a reliable, long-term ride.

This guide to shopping for a used vehicle will give you some advice on how to find great cars for sale in Ipswich.

How Many Miles Has It Covered?

If a vehicle catches your eyes, take note of the mileage. This should either be disclosed as part of the original advertisement or by the seller in person. So, you should really know the number before you start seriously considering a purchase.

However, it is still useful to check a second time just to make sure that nothing has changed. This is especially important if you are interacting with a private seller because they have probably upped the mileage a little while trying to sell it. Generally, dealerships do not move the cars before they are sold.

Has the Car Recently Been Serviced or Repaired?

The temptation is to avoid second-hand cars which have recently been repaired or restructured in some way. Yet, this does not really make sense, particularly when buying from an authorised dealership. All vehicles need a little nip and tuck eventually and, if it has been done within the last year, it is a repair that you will not have to pay for anytime soon.

Obviously, it is a good idea to ask questions about the nature of the repairs and what effect they might have on the lifespan of the car. However, you should not write a vehicle off just because it has not got a blemish-free history. Similarly, a history of regular servicing is very desirable, as it shows that the previous owner took good care of it.

Are MOT and Road Tax Included in the Price?

There is no legal obligation for a dealership to include MOT or road tax in the sale price, but it is fairly common because many drivers sell their vehicles before either one expires. So, it is helpful to inquire about this before you agree on a deal.

Also, ask plenty of questions about the conditions of the warranty. If you buy from a dealership, you are protected by the UK Sale of Goods Act, but this is not equivalent to a warranty. There is no legal requirement to provide one, but most companies do these days.

Can I Take the Car for a Test Drive?

You should always ask the seller if you can take the vehicle for a brief test drive. You will find many different models for sale in Ipswich, and reliable sellers have no reason to refuse this request. In fact, it is probably safer to avoid anybody who flat out rejects the notion of a test drive just to be on the safe side.

If your knowledge of cars is limited, take a friend or family member with a keen eye for motors. They will be able to accompany you during the test and ask any questions which you might miss if you were alone. It is always handy to have a second opinion.
