The Shocking Truth About Winter Car Care
Millions of motorists across the UK are unprepared for winter driving. Nearly half of people surveyed admitted that they’ve not conducted any maintenance checks on their vehicle, which leads to significant increases of cars breaking down during the cold seasons.
So how can you lower your car’s risk of a breakdown? We’ve compiled a list of the simple maintenance checks to perform – this is our car winter checklist:
Check The Battery
This should be your first priority. Winter can be especially hard on car batteries, with the cold weather reducing the output along with increased use of heaters and lights straining it further.
Check the antifreeze and screen wash
Make sure to check your levels of antifreeze and screen wash. As the name suggests, antifreeze stops the water in the engine cooling system from freezing. Keeping the ratio of engine coolant 50/50 water and antifreeze will stop the system from freezing up.
Check Your Tyres
Check that your tyres have the right amount of tread. This is important year round, but the wet winter roads are especially dangerous if your tyres don’t have enough grip.
Carry a Winter Breakdown Kit
You never know when your car could unexpectedly break down. Carrying a car breakdown kit might seem a bit extreme, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially if you’re taking a long journey through some more remote areas. Keep a kit in the car with a torch, blanket, hi-vis vest, de-icer and scraper, first aid kit, antifreeze, screen wash, and food supplies. Remember to charge your phone before a long journey too!
